Emperor Charles IV laid the foundation stone on 9 July 1357, at a time when Prague was the Capital of Europe at the heart of the Holy Roman Empire.
The Charles Bridge can get very busy in the daytime – and it is as well to watch your wallet or purse – but an early morning stroll in winter is the finest time to enjoy this masterpiece.
